IZMIR — The Mayor of İzmir’s Güzelbahçe district, Mustafa Günay, and the municipal Director of Zoning and Urban Planning, Özgür Bayraktar, have been formally arrested as part of an ongoing corruption investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
The arrests follow a targeted operation by law enforcement after the prosecutor’s office issued detention warrants for seven individuals. The suspects face a series of serious charges, including:
Following their detentions and subsequent interrogations by the police, Günay and Bayraktar were referred to the courthouse, where the court ordered their formal arrest pending trial. The investigation into the remaining suspects and the full scope of the alleged corruption scheme within the municipality is currently ongoing.
